Excursions with Dr. Art Cromwell: “Jazz Made in Detroit”
The emergence of Jazz in major U.S. cities reached an apotheosis in Detroit from 1950-1970. During this period several waves of Jazz artists swept out of the Motor City to contribute to the growth and expansion of Jazz nationwide. These musicians were a testament to the city’s vibrant arts community, and the generation of mentors, whose protégés broadened Jazz’s expressive palette.
Saturday’s Excursions begins a multi-part exploration of Detroit’s Jazz contributions with samplings from artists who were part of four generations of “Jazz Made in Detroit.”
