The Bishops would start with the ball and take a quick three-and-out and force a punt. The Bishops needed to ensure they could get the ball down the field eventually in the game, for they were missing their starting junior quarterback Hayden Purdue and were forced to start freshmen Titan Grandstaff under center.
The Rockets seemed to be attempting to one up Bishop Rosecrans, because they also went three-and-out, ending with a punt. They say history tends to repeat itself because yet again, the Bishops cannot make anything out of their opportunity, once again being forced to bring out the punt team.
Finally, after many follies, Berne Union set up a good drive in the middle of the field, just knocking on the Bishop’s door. Rockets quarterback Jarett Thompson dropped back, looking down the middle of the field and saw his big target, tight end Ray Davenport who stiff arms a defender to run free into the endzone for the 1st score of the game. The Rockets missed the extra point though, taking the lead 6-0.
Going into the second quarter, Berne Union wasted no time marching down the field. Running Back Dylan Finefrock would take the toss to the right and muscled his way in for the Rockets who chose to go for the two-point conversion and got it with a run by Cody Homan to make it 14-0 Rockets.
The Bishops stuck to their trend of having to punt and give the ball back to Berne Union. The Rockets once again made their way into Bishop territory and with 15 seconds on the clock Cody Homan takes the handoff for his 2nd score of the night, strengthening the Rockets lead to 21-0.
With only 5 seconds left, Titan Grandstaff rolled right and threw up a prayer that came true because receiver Brody Zemba caught it and trotted his way for the Bishop’s first score of the night making the game 21-7. On that play, however, Grandstaff took a big hit which caused him to be taken out for the rest of the game, making third stringer Nick Bernath the starter.
The second half began similarly to the first with punt after punt. Finally, midway through the quarter with 6:00 on the clock, Brody Zemba took the wildcat snap to the left and launches himself toward the pylon and just makes it, giving the Bishop’s life going forward, score being 21-14.
The Rockets took that personally because they got into the red zone and on the 4-yard line, Dylan Finfrock got in for his second touchdown of the night. The Rockets held onto their lead, finishing the game 28-14.
