ATHENS, OH – During the month of October, WOUB Public Media and the WOUB Learning Lab are taking part in events to share the POV documentary King Coal at several locations around the region.

King Coal was the premiere film for POV’s 37th season. It’s a film about the cultural roots of coal and its waning impact over a sector of American life, while also making space for a dream of the future to emerge. A lyrical tapestry of a place and people, the film meditates on the complex history and future of the coal industry, the communities it has shaped, and the myths it has created. The film reshapes the boundaries of documentary filmmaking and transcends time and place, untangling the pain from the beauty, and illuminating the innately human capacity for imagination and change.

In partnership with local organizations, libraries and Ohio University regional campuses, WOUB is giving people in the region the opportunity to experience the film at locations close to their homes and in some cases hear from and talk with the filmmaker.
