The first set started out strong as both teams brought the heat. The Buckeyes started the set out with an immediate block from senior Gianna Dixon, but the Bulldogs did not stay down long as they went on a six-point service run right off the bat. Bloom-Carroll senior Corinne Knapp had two back-to-back kills, four total in the set, that helped keep the Bulldogs up. While Nelsonville-York played strong and kept up their endurance, they could not keep up with the Bulldogs. Bloom-Carroll took the set 25 to 12 with a kill from Senior Evelyn Brown.
Going into the second set, the Buckeyes came in ready to redeem themselves. The set started off scrappy with Nelsonville-York ready to play dirty, but the Bulldogs were not having it. Bloom-Carroll went on another five-point run and managed to stay ahead with three more back-to-back kills from Knapp. Toward the middle of the set the Buckeyes had an expected surprise as their setter Megan Booth achieved her 2000th career assist. This celebration called for some redemption as the Buckeyes gained some motivation and went on a six-point service run in hopes of catching up with the Bulldogs. They could not pull it off though, giving the second set to Bloom-Carroll 25 to 20.
Moving into the third set, the Bulldogs were ready to take their win, and the Buckeyes were still holding out hope to come back. This set started out like the rest with Nelsonville-York taking the first couple of points and Bloom-Carroll going on another run. Buckeyes senior Kyleigh Warren was trying to keep up with the Bulldogs with multiple blocks and kills. Timeouts were being called by both coaches hoping to give their teams the motivation they needed to take the set, but the Bulldogs finished strong taking the set 25 to 11.
Although the Buckeyes did not take the win, they were still happy to be celebrating Booth’s massive achievement of the night. Head Coach Wayne Dicken had this to say about his special setter.
“I tell her she’s the best to ever do it. She’s a great setter and such a smart player on the floor, I call her my general.”
The Nelsonville-York Buckeyes host the Wellston Golden Rockets on Thursday. The Bloom-Carroll Bulldogs are hosting the Liberty Union Lions on Thursday as well.
