Fort Frye slips past Marietta for first conference win
< < Back toBEVERLY, Ohio (WOUB) – The Fort Frye Cadets hosted the Marietta Tigers as conference play continues. These two teams met for the second time in history.
The Cadets started off with the ball and Clayton Miller was handed the ball as he weaved his way to the end zone from 66 yards out to put the Cadets up 7-0 early in the first. The Tigers got the ball but were unable to get through the Cadet defense. The Fort Frye front seven were an unstoppable wall throughout the first quarter, as Marietta could get nothing going against them.
The Tigers punted the ball away, and the Cadets marched their way down the field. Fort Frye’s quarterback handed the ball off to Cadet Tyce Beardsley, who broke free of any defenders and took it straight home for six. Cadets up 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Marietta’s run game was being stopped in its tracks all night. The Tigers could not gain any momentum through the first quarter. This Cadet defense was causing problems for Tiger quarterback Drew Warden. The run game was getting nowhere, and Fort Frye defenders were all over the ball.
Marietta’s defense was making it harder for Fort Frye to keep up the momentum, holding them at 14 points for the rest of the first quarter and all of the second. The Cadets marched down the field but could not get into the red zone and put themselves in scoring position.
Near the very end of the second quarter, the Tigers fought their way down the field, making it to the six-yard line. A quick handoff to Tiger Carson Chavez who pushes through the defensive line and punches it in for six to put Marietta on the board. 14-7 Cadets at halftime.
The Tigers managed to push their way into the end zone two more times, but it was not enough to topple the Cadets. The Fort Frye Cadets won 28-21.
Next week, the Cadets travel to Warren to face off against the Warriors, and Marietta travels to Point Pleasant.
