Portsmouth West routes Northwest in inter-conference battle
< < Back toPortsmouth, Ohio (WOUB) – The Northwest Mohawks (4-4) came down to The Rock Stadium in Portsmouth to face off against the Portsmouth West Senators (6-2) on Friday night. The Senators took this one by a score of 35-0.
The game started off slow, two three-and-outs, and it looked to be a low scoring affair early on.
Portsmouth West changed this mindset shortly after, however. Anthony Bishop broke the ice with a 27-yard touchdown to put the Senators up 6-0. The extra point was no good.
This would be the only score of the first quarter, but Portsmouth West played ball control to open the second.
A methodical drive full of dominant rushes set up a 18-yard score from RB Braden Adkins with 4:49 on the clock. The 2PT conversion was good, which put the Senators ahead 14-0.
The Portsmouth West defense was practically a brick wall the remainder of the game. Northwest tried to get something going offensively, but ultimately failed in doing so.
An improbable goal line fumble recovery touchdown from center Nichol Rapp gave the Senators a 21-0 advantage at halftime.
A big score from Portsmouth West’s Mason Parker was called back in the third quarter. Shortly after, however, he made sure he had a touchdown to his name. A 31-yard score from the senior put the Senators up 28-0 with 2 minutes left in the third quarter.
Right before the end of the third quarter, Anthony Bishop had his name called again. A 78-yard score put the nail in the coffin, and Portsmouth West pulled its starters for the remainder of the game. 35-0 Senators.
Portsmouth West’s unrelenting run defense combined with a dominant rushing attack was too much for Northwest to handle on Friday night. The Senators look ahead to Oak Hill (1-7) next week, as the Mohawks look to bounce back against Waverly (5-3) at home.
