“The Newport Jazz Festival: Generations & Genres”, an Excursions Special will be heard Sat. Oct 12 from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. EDT

During the Fifties Columbia, Verve, and RCA annually produced albums taken from one of the oldest Jazz concert series in the US, the Newport Jazz Festival. Saturday’s Excursions Special will present a chronology utilizing selections from these recordings, to span the first thirty years of music from Newport.

Our journey begins with the festival’s second year and the reemergence of Miles Davis in an all-star group. Other festival selections will trace the expansion of Jazz from the classic big band era (including the famous ‘56 Ellington concert), to emerging artists representing more recent genre developments, which along with the festival’s bourgeoning popularity necessitated the venue’s eventual move to NYC.

“The Newport Jazz Festival: Generations & Genres”, an Excursions Special will be heard Sat. Oct 12 from 6-9:00 pm EDT, as part of Radio Free Athens, on WOUB public radio Ohio University.
