The Vinton County Vikings fall to the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes
< < Back toMcARTHUR, Ohio (WOUB) – The Nelsonville-York Buckeyes (6-2) defeated the Vinton County Vikings (3-5) 39-12. The Buckeyes looked to get revenge on the Vikings after losing 13-7 last year.
The Buckeyes broke the deadlock with some wildcat offense as they scored with a 7-yard touchdown pass from running back Austin Gautier to fullback Dakota Cunningham to make it a 7-0 game after the extra point near the end of the first quarter.
The Buckeye defense would step on the Vikings’ ensuing drive with a turnover on downs. They would take advantage as after previously scoring with his arm, Austin Gautier would score with his legs with a 2-yard rushing touchdown. The extra point would be no good, and Nelsonville-York led 13-0.
After the defense forced another turnover on downs, the Buckeye offense would waste no time as they immediately scored with their potent wildcat offense, as wide receiver Landon Inman would have a 2-yard rushing touchdown. However, the extra point would be no good once more, making the Nelsonville-York lead 19-0.
Once it seemed like nothing would go right for the Vikings, a prayer would be answered in the form of a wild passing touchdown. Quarterback Jase Moore launched the ball down the field, it ricocheted off a Buckeye defender and into the hands of wide receiver Lane Haybron and he would run it all the way for a 53-yard touchdown. The 2-point conversion would be no good and the score would be 19-6 Nelsonville-York going into halftime.
Nelsonville-York turned it up a notch starting with a quick passing touchdown from quarterback Landon Sullivan to wide receiver Logan Meek. After the extra point this would make the score 26-6 Buckeyes.
Austin Gautier previously got a touchdown with a pass, got a touchdown with a rush, and then he earned a touchdown on special teams as he picked up a muffed punt and went straight into the endzone. The Buckeyes led 32-6 after the extra point.
For the remainder of the game, Buckeyes would go on to pick up a dominant 39-12 win.
The story of this game was an impressive offensive performance from running back Austin Gautier and stonewall defense from Nelsonville-York that got them their revenge. They look to continue their momentum against Athens (9-0).
Vinton County looks to bounce back next week against Wellston (5-4).
