Steubenville ends Athens’ season in Dominant Fashion

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (WOUB) – The Athens Bulldogs crossed the state to match up against the Steubenville Big Reds in the Region 11 quarterfinals. 

The Big Red’s received the ball to start the game off. Steubenville quarterback Aiden Davis put the ball up and receiver Tre’Von Wiggins put them right at the 10-yard line. Aiden Davis snapped the ball and scrambled into the endzone to put the Big Red on the board. 7-0 Steubenville. 

The Bulldogs recovered the kickoff and strung a drive together, eating up the clock. Athens was unable to sneak into the endzone and punted the ball which left Steubenville on their one-yard line. Steubenville could not get down into Athens territory and punted the ball off. The Bulldogs recovered and made their way to the Big Red’s 39-yard line before the first quarter ended. 

Athens took the ball to start the second quarter but were unable to score, and Steubenville got the ball on turnover on downs. The Big Red got busy immediately and put the ball up for a deep pass to receiver Ziare Scurry who took it 65 yards to put the Big Red in scoring position. Scurry’s reception put Ca’Juan Bryant in position to punch it in right at the goal-line to put the Big Red’s up 14-0. 

Steubenville followed up their previous touchdown with a six-yard touchdown from tailback Jalen Minniefield, who weaved his way right through the defensive line to put Steubenville up 21-0 at the end of the half. 

Athens started the second half with the ball but could not shake Steubenville’s defense and ended up going nowhere. On Steubenville’s next drive, Athens forced a fumble and recovered the ball on their 25-yard line but could not find the endzone. Steubenville recovered the ball and found tight end Nolan Blackburn for a 40-yard receiving touchdown to put the Big Red up 28-0. 

Steubenville managed to recover the ball after the touchdown and found themselves in a race against the clock, and managed to find Tre’Von Wiggins open in the endzone for his second touchdown of the night, which put the Big Red up 35-0 ending the third quarter. 

After going back and forth to start the fourth quarter, Bulldog running back Alex Pero managed to force his way into the endzone to put the Bulldogs on the board, making the score 35-7. The Bulldogs defense swarmed any Big Red attempt at a play and found the ball back with a little over a minute left. Bulldog quarterback Daniel Heightland managed to spot Leo Martin open and hit him for another score right at the end of the game.  

The Steubenville Big Red took the game 35-14 and will face Dover next week.
