ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — It was education day in the Convocation Center, as over 1,000 students from local schools packed the arena. Ohio Women’s Basketball (2-4) rewarded the students with a win of 97-37 over the Ohio Christian Trailblazers (3-5).

The game started slow with both teams totaling more turnovers than points in the first three minutes. It was the Bobcat rebounding that gave them the edge. Grabbing eight offensive rebounds in just the first quarter allowed Ohio to score 14 of their 18 points in the paint.

Head Coach Bob Bolden discussed the slow start saying “We got off to a sluggish start, and I think we realized that was not good enough, and it wasn’t the example we wanted to set. I think our players deserve a heck of a lot of credit for turning it around and bringing up the energy.”

In the second quarter, Ohio was able to take better care of the ball as they did not record a single turnover in the quarter. While on defense they forced Ohio Christian to turn the ball over fourteen times in the first half.

The Bobcat offense started to take off near the end of the first quarter, using good ball movement to find several players wide-open. Ohio took advantage of the open shots draining five shots from behind the arc in just the second quarter.

Freshman Gigi Bowers was responsible for two of those shots, as she led the game with twelve points at the half. Ohio only allowed seven points in the second quarter, giving them a 44-19 lead at halftime.

Coming out of the half Ohio did not slow down, they scored 27 straight points which put the Bobcats in a comfortable lead. They shot significantly fewer three-pointers and found success in the paint.

It was a team effort as ten Bobcats were able to find the bottom of the net. They also were able to pass the ball a lot better than they have been, totaling 22 assists as a team which was a season-high.

The star for the Ohio offense was Freshman Gigi Bowers as she had a career game scoring 21 points which included five three-pointers.

Ohio Christian had a clear disadvantage in size and could not get anything moving on offense. Turnovers were the biggest problem for the Trailblazers as they ended the game with 27 of them.

Shooting has been a concern for the Bobcats in the past, but they were able to get the ball in the hoop against the Trailblazers. Ohio shot 47.5% from the field, their best of the season.

Ohio ended the game strong and won the game with a final score of 97-37. Their most points in a game since Dec 15, 2021, when they scored 94 points against Minnesota.

Freshman Dani Scully talked about what they need to carry over to the next game saying, “I just think we are taking how good we are feeling after this win, and building each other up moving onto the next game.”

Ohio Christian will return to action when they travel down to face Georgetown College on Dec 7.

Ohio will look to get back-to-back wins for the first time this season as they face Butler on Dec 8.
