Waterford, Ohio (WOUB) – The Waterford (18-1,9-0) girls welcomed in the Eastern Eagles (1-15, 0-9) with a chance to claim hardwood. With a win the Wildcats claim the TVC-Hocking title. Waterford dominated Eastern winning by a score of 55-14.

In the first, Waterford dominated short-handed Eastern. Waterford star senior Kendall Sury got to work.

Sury is a talented and highly intelligent guard. In the first Sury got started in the paint getting two buckets down low.

The Waterford offense along with Sury moved the ball fast as the quarter went on and got to the rim with ease.

A bright spot for the Eagles in the opening frame was Brynlee Pottmeyer.

Pottmeyer nearing the end of the first was able to come away with back-to-back steal and scores.

But to end the half with time expiring, Sury approached half court and hit an incredible buzzer-beating half-court shot.

Sury finished the first with seven points and Waterford got out to a big early lead against the eagles, 19-4.

In the second it was more of the same but this time leading the way was Sury’s counterpart, Avery Wagner.

Wagner displayed her inside prowess with silky post moves and great shot-making.

Wagner finished the second quarter with eight points and led Waterford to a 31-8 lead over Eastern at the break.

The second half started right where it left off with Wagner getting to the line and scoring in the post.

Wagner quickly scored six points to open the half.

As the game went on it also became clear how exceptionally coached the Wildcat girls are by Jerry Close.

Close has his offense running like a well-oiled machine. You can notice the attention to detail when looking at Waterford’s pump-fakes.

Every single time an Eagles defender closes out on a Wildcat, a pump-fake is followed. This is because Close is teaching his players to always look at the hoop. This creates so many more opportunities for the offense and is just one small reason why Waterford is a state champion contender.

Waterford continued their dominance as they led 46-8 going into the final frame of action.

The fourth started out with positives for the Eagles. Mackenzie Robertson pulled up from the top of the key to drain a three-pointer.

Then on defense, Olivia Simpson stepped into the lane as a Wildcat was driving and emphatically blocked a shot.

This would be the last of the positives for the game as a running fourth quarter clock would end the game, Waterford claims the TVC-Hocking title with a huge win.

Waterford will be back in action for more TVC-Hocking action when they travel to face the Belpre Golden Eagles on February sixth.

The Eastern Eagles are right back in action on the second leg of a back-to-back as they travel to Nelsonville-York to play the Buckeyes on February 1st
