NELSONVILLE, Ohio (WOUB) — Nelsonville-York welcomed the Meigs Marauders to Ben Wagner Gymnasium on their senior night for a late-season in-conference matchup. The Buckeyes kept it close through three quarters but came up short 67-53.

Nelsonville-York came into this matchup 12-7 and 6-4 in the TVC-Ohio. The Marauders entered 19-1 and undefeated in conference play.

Both teams started hot with Junior Carson Davis getting things started for the Marauders with an early three-pointer. The Buckeyes kept things close with offensive firepower from Junior Bean Martin. They took advantage of some early Marauder mistakes and were down by just one point at the end of the first quarter 21-20.

The second quarter showed much of the same, with momentum shifting between the two teams rapidly. Sophomore Reed Brinager lit up the court from all over, helping the Marauders gain traction throughout the quarter. With the Buckeyes consistently sinking shots led by Briant Call, they were down by one point again at the half 33-32.

Both the Buckeyes and the Marauders came out of the break playing intense defense. Meigs took the slight advantage and started to pull away by the end of the third quarter, leading 50-44.

The Buckeyes began to get tired in the fourth, with Davis and Brinager helping the Marauders to a 15-2 run toward the end of the game. Inside two minutes to go, Nelsonville-York’s Cam Sullivan and Alec Thompson fouled out, and Meigs took the win.

Meigs’ Davis and Brinager combined for 49 points and 20 rebounds, while Nelsonville-York’s Call and Bean Martin combined for 32 points. Despite the outcome, Head Coach Blaine Gabriel still had high praise for the team.

“We get after each other in practice, they rely on each other,” Gabriel said. “We bicker among ourselves a little bit, but that’s competition.”

The Buckeyes will look to bounce back at Federal Hocking on Saturday.
