ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) – The director of the Athens County Board of Elections is taking on a new role, this time as deputy director.
Debbie Quivey has worked at the office since 1992 and became director in 2006. After almost 20 years in the position, she said “it’s time” for her to step aside.
“It has been a pleasure, and it will continue to be a pleasure” to run elections for the people of Athens County, Quivey said.
One of the highlights of her tenure as director was making sure Athens County had “cutting edge” voting technology.
Deputy Director Tony Brooks II was sworn in to replace Quivey. Brooks said he began working at the Board of Elections office as a bag carrier when he was 16 years old.
“It has been a long road,” he said. “It feels like I’ve been here my whole life.”
He became deputy director in 2021, replacing his mother after she died.
In an emotional address to board members, Brooks said, “I think I made my mom proud.”
Quivey said there is no one else she feels more comfortable handing off her former role to.
“We will work together as a team,” she said.
Quivey and Brooks said they plan to continue working to make elections in Athens County secure and fair.
