The paid internship begins May 19 and ends August 1

ATHENS, OH –Seventeen college students from five different universities have been selected to work in the WOUB Public Media Newsroom as part of the summer internship program. The 11-week program pays interns to work at WOUB Public Media and provides them with the immersive practical experience of producing daily content as part of a professional multimedia organization.

“The WOUB News Summer Internship is a wonderful opportunity for students to be part of the day-to-day work of a newsroom,” said WOUB News Editor-in-Chief Atish Baidya. “They will grow so much during their 11 weeks in the newsroom. And our audience benefits too. With interns from five different universities working to provide news and information to communities in southeast Ohio, the diversity of institutions reflects the values of WOUB Public Media, not only in our service mission but also in our educational mission.”

The interns are coached by WOUB professional staff who challenge them to grow as media professionals. While learning, the interns are producing award-winning stories that provide vital news and information to the region.

The internship begins May 19 and runs through August 1. Summer interns use a multiplatform approach to produce and report for WOUB TV’s NewsWatch, a nightly half-hour newscast, WOUB AM/FM and woub.org and are supervised by WOUB professional news and technical staff while receiving a stipend of $15 an hour.

The Charles and Lucille King Family Foundation WOUB Internship Fund (in Memory of Jan and Olivia Sole) helps support salaries for the student interns. The fund was established in memory of Jan Sole (1956-2007) and her late daughter, Olivia Gray Sole (1989-2004). Jan Sole graduated from OHIO’s Journalism school in 1979 and worked at WOUB as a radio producer and host of the station’s classical music program for 25 years.
