ATHENS, OH – Sugar cookies and popsicles are on the menu for children and families when they start learning about kitchen chemistry from PBS Kids Ruff Ruffman. The WOUB Learning Lab and Jefferson Market Place Culinary Studio in Athens will conduct two “Kitchen Chemistry with Ruff Ruffman” events in April. The classes are free for families with children in kindergarten – 3rd grade. Families can choose which class works best for their schedule.

“Together with Jefferson Market Place Culinary Studios, we’re creating a space where families can learn, experiment, and cook together,” said WOUB Learning Lab Early Childhood Education Specialist Lisa Kinnard. “My hope is that families will see how everyday moments in the kitchen can become meaningful learning experiences—sparking curiosity, creativity, and discovery.”

Each session will start with a five-minute Ruff Ruffman episode that explores kitchen chemistry. Ruff and his twin brother Scruff compete to be the best caterers at a party! As Ruff tries his best to make his culinary creations come to life, he runs into a few problems along the way. He is excited to discover that by investigating solids and liquids and exploring heating and cooling, he can use science to become a better cook. But will that be enough to make Ruff king of the cook-off?

During the classes, children will be decorating and personalizing aprons that they can take to use at home. PBS resources and books will also be distributed and sent home with the children.

“I hope this inspires families to include children in the cooking process at home,” said Kinnard. “To help encourage continued explorations in the kitchen, families will take home activity kits utilizing PBS resources.”

The sessions will take place on April 23 (Sugar Cookies) and April 30 (Juice/Smoothies/Popsicles) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Jefferson Market Place, 101 East Union St, Athens, OH (free parking available). An adult must attend and participate alongside children. Simple kitchen tools will be used and will need adult supervision and assistance.
