Bulldogs run past the Chieftains in 100th meeting

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — The Logan Chieftains traveled to Athens, Ohio, to visit the Athens Bulldogs to renew their rivalry. This is the 100th time these two teams have met. Athens would take this game 41-0.
After the opening kickoff, Logan’s first drive stalled early, and they had to punt the ball quickly to a hungry Athens offense. On the Bulldogs’ third play on offense, running back Anthony Sutton blasted through the gap and took off for a 51-yard untouched and the Bulldogs are on the board early.
Logan got the ball back and after a few strong runs from running back Ethan Courtney, quarterback Carson Tootle dropped back to pass the ball over the middle and was picked off by Weston Wheatley. Two plays later, and Athen’s quarterback Daniel Heightland finds Tyri Cunningham on a short route that he took all the way to the endzone.
The first quarter ended with a score of 14-0 in favor of Athens. Tempers were flaring in this quarter with multiple unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and players having to be separated after the whistle.
On the first play of the second quarter, Anthony Sutton takes a pitch to the left for twelve yards and walks into the endzone. Everything was going right for Athens, the offense was clicking, and the defense was shutting down everything Logan was throwing at them. Athens had one more charge to end the first half but could not capitalize on the opportunity as they were shut down to end the first half.
When the Bulldogs came out for the second half, there was no stopping them, the Bulldogs went on to win this historic matchup 41-0 taking home the first ever Dunn-Metters Memorial Trophy.
Athens moves on to play Paint Valley in week two of the regular season, Paint Valley had a tough loss to Valley in week one. Logan is hoping to bounce back against a Nelsonville York team that won a hard-fought game against Trimble.
