MERCERVILLE, Ohio (WOUB) The South Gallia Rebels had quite the matchup welcoming the Eastern Eagles in a matchup of unbeaten teams. It would eventually be the Rebels staying perfect in a 22-21 overtime thriller.

South Gallia started aggressively with designed QB runs for Hunter Wright, falling short of a first down, but a fumble from the Eagles gave it right back, and Wright would capitalize on a huge carry into the end zone to give the Rebels an early lead. However, a missed extra point would leave it 6-0.

Eastern would strike back immediately with a major kick return. Ethan Edwards would command the offense, forcing his way across the goal line for 6 points. The Eagles would go up 7-6 and hold on to the lead for the rest of the quarter.

South Gallia started the second quarter with a new face under center as sophomore QB Ely Sizemore commanded South Gallia to an eventual three-and-out. Both offenses would then stall out before South Gallia went back to Wright at quarterback.

Layne Wright, brother of Hunter, would be the next Rebel to score as he marched down and extended over the pylon twice, once for a huge touchdown carry, and once for the 2-point conversion.

It looked like South Gallia would hold onto the lead, but a bad snap on a punt would give the Eagles the ball with 20 seconds left on the Rebels’ 35. A quick out route would set up a huge Hail Mary deep to WR Colton Lloyd before the half to tie it at 14 apiece.

A rain delay would lengthen the half for both teams, and neither could get the offense moving until the Rebels got ahead to win 22-21.
