Ace Nation: Trimble defeats Fisher Catholic in a five-set battle

GLOUSTER, Ohio (WOUB) — The Trimble Tomcats won in five sets over the Fisher Catholic Irish in a Monday night matchup.  

Set one started off strong on Trimble’s side of the net as they forced multiple errors on Fisher Catholic, taking a quick 6 to 0 lead.  

Halfway through the first set, Tomcat Outside Bailee Bickley jumped at the net and collided with a teammate. Bickley injured her ankle and left the game, causing Trimble to scramble and adjust its lineup. 

The Irish used the momentum shift and chaos to their advantage, building a strong block at the net that Trimble could not break through. The Tomcats fought until the last point but dropped the first set 25 to 22.  

In the second set, Trimble struggled with energy from the start. Fisher Catholic delivered five aces early and controlled the pace, quickly leading 18 to 7. The Tomcats couldn’t find a rhythm and lost the set 25 to 19. 

The Tomcats pounced back in the third set, keeping it a close set as the defense held their ground against Fisher Catholic’s height at the net. Libero Alyvia Portier covered the entire court, helping her team secure the third set win, 25 to 21.

Both teams entered the fourth set aggressively but shifted strategies. Instead of power swings, both teams dominated through tip kills and setter dumps that pushed both defenses to the limit. 

With the score tied at 14, and both the Tomcats and Irish having worn out their defensive players, the set turned into a battle of serves. Aces and errors decided the final stretch of the set, and Trimble came out on top with a 25 to 23 win to tie the match.  

The energy was high in the gym, and both sides of the net were ready to take the five-set victory home. The Tomcats forced multiple errors on the Irish and ended the set 15 to 9.  

The Trimble Tomcats host the Belpre Golden Eagles on Thursday and hope to add another win to their record. While the Fisher Catholic Irish hope to bounce back against Grove City Christian Tuesday.
