Ace Nation: The Alexander Spartans sweep the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes in three sets

ALBANY, Ohio (WOUB) — The Alexander Spartans hosted the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes in a Tuesday night matchup. The Spartans swept the Buckeyes in a very competitive game.  

Alexander came out in the first set energetic all around the court. Spartan number one, Meena Juedes, was going all around the court with blocks and kills across the net. Buckeye number five, Lexi Warren, helped tie up the score early in the set with a powerful kill.  

Both teams battled through some errors across the net, but Nelsonville-York’s number six, Morgan Lehman, and number 15, Madi Pidcock, put a big block over Juedes. Alexander’s number seven, Maddy Penrod, helped fight back for the Spartans with two kills in the middle of the set.  

The fighting Spartan energy kept going through the end of the first set with powerful swings. Juedes put it down on set point to take set one, Alexander won 25 to 18.

The Spartans started strong with the second across the front, but that wouldn’t stop Pidcock from putting down some big kills. Warren had back-to-back aces to also push the Buckeyes forward. Alexander struggled to respond to Nelsonville-York’s style of play, giving the Buckeyes a good lead in the middle of the set. 

Spartan number 14, Lila Moser, had two kills to bring up Alexander. This was a big momentum switch for Alexander after really battling it out with the Buckeyes. 

This set went into extra points from kills on both teams. Juedes and Pidcock kept going up at the net, fighting it out. But Spartan number six, Ava McCall, had back-to-back aces to seal the deal. Alexander won set two 27 to 25. 

Nelsonville-York found a good lead into the start of the third set. Unfortunately, it seemed to be lights out in the alley with the Spartans having massive kills from across the court. Alexander’s number two, Abbi Ohms, also had two aces in a row, and one final kill from Juedes helped seal the match for the Spartans. Alexander won set three, 25 to 18.  

“Our offense is really just a team,” Spartan Laney Douglas said. “We all work together, and we all do our part.”

Alexander will travel to River Valley to face off against the Raiders on Thursday. The Nelsonville-York Buckeyes will prepare to play the Vinton County Vikings on Thursday as well.
