Ace Nation: The Eastern Eagles sweep the Federal Hocking Lancers in three sets
< < Back toSTEWART, Ohio (WOUB) — The Federal Hocking Lancers and the Eastern Eagles faced off in a TVC matchup Thursday night. Eastern managed to pull ahead and win in straight sets.
The opening set saw Eastern jump out to an early lead. Three aces from Eastern’s Makenzie Robertson gave the Eagles a six to one lead. A few Lancers errors kept the set in the Eagles favor.
The momentum continued to build through the rest of the set, with back-to-back kills from Braelyn Simpson extending the Eagles’ lead to 22 to 10. The Lancers couldn’t keep up, and a kill from Brooklyn Barkey closed out the set, with the Eagles taking a decisive 25 to 15 win.
The second set began with back-and-forth action from both teams. A kill and a block from the Lancers’ Karlee Grimm gave Federal Hocking an early seven to five lead. However, a couple of errors allowed Eastern to settle back in. The Eagles took advantage and fought back, tying the score at nine to nine.
The set remained close, with both teams trading points back-and-forth. Eventually, two aces from Eastern’s Kinslie Well and a kill from Robertson gave the Eagles the edge. The set finished with a 25 to 16 Eagle’s victory, giving them a two to zero match lead.
The third set started similar to the second, with both teams staying neck-and-neck. Errors from both teams kept the score close. However, a series of aces from Eastern’s Emeri Llyod gave the Eagles an early 10 to three lead.
The Lancers were not going to give up that easily. Several kills from Grimm and strong plays from the team helped them to claw their way back to a one-point deficit, making the score 16 to 15 in the Eagles’ favor.
The set stayed close from that point on, with both teams trading points back-and-forth. In the end, Eastern was able to fend off the Lancers’ push. A kill and a block from the Eagles’ Peyton Bailey closed out the set. The Eagles closed out the set 25 to 21 and swept the match three to zero.
The Eagles look to keep this momentum going next week on Tuesday in their match against Marietta. The Lancers look to bounce back on Saturday in their match against Chesapeake.
