Matt Zazon records shutout as Ohio Hockey outlasts Kent State 4-0

ATHENS, OHIO (WOUB) – It was first responders night at Bird Arena as the No. 1 ranked Ohio Bobcats looked to take on the unranked Kent State Golden Flashes to add another game to their home winning streak. The Bobcats were undefeated at home going into the game, and the Golden Flashes were coming off a road win against West Virginia looking to keep the momentum rolling.

Ohio recorded a shutout victory over Kent State ending in a 4-0 win.

This one started off slow with neither team getting ahead of each other offensively, both goalies were playing at a high level. The Bobcats would get a number of opportunities to score on a power play but just couldn’t find the net. The Bobcats were also working extremely well out of face offs but Kent State’s goalie Matthew Weiss was holding his own against the Bobcat offense.

The first period was scoreless but the second would not follow suit because with two minutes left in the period Alex Mazzuca would find the back of the net to put the Bobcats up 1-0. This period is where Ohio pulled away in the shots on goal category with the differential going from nine to thirty by the end of the second period.  

Going into the third period the Bobcats looked to extend the lead and the Golden Flashes looked to get even. The goalies on either side were playing some of their best hockey, with Weiss and Matt Zazon making some incredible saves, but Zazon would come away with a shutout. As for Weiss, with eleven minutes left in the game Luc Reeve scored a goal assisted by Laker Aldridge, 2-0.

That wouldn’t be the end though with another goal coming not even five minutes later from Tommy Kloepfer assisted by Luc Reeve and Laker Aldridge extending the lead to three. As the game ticked down the Bobcats would score on an empty net with Drake Nabozny to make the final 4-0 as Ohio remained undefeated at home.  

The next time the Bobcats will take the ice will be at home against #10 ranked Maryville in a weekend series on November 14th and 15th.
