TVC-Ohio Standings: Meigs boys tied with Wellston boys in a fight for the top, Athens girls remain perfect in the conference

TVC-Ohio Boys’ Standings
T1. Meigs Marauders | 8-5 (Conf. 4-1)

Meigs had two conference contests this week, the first being an important home matchup against Vinton County. The Vikings took home a three-point win, 58-55, and gave the Marauders their first conference loss. Carson Davis led the way with 24 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Owen Tracy also had ten points, six rebounds and six assists in the contest.
Meigs quickly bounced back and took down River Valley in their final game of the week, 75-52. The Marauders’ big three led the way in this contest. Davis had another monster game, going for 29, 18 rebounds and eight assists. Tracy had a double-double with 14 and ten assists. Colben Beucler added 16 points. Beucler also played earlier in the week against VC.
As for this week, Meigs only has one contest, with it being against Wellston. The Marauders took down Wellston by 36 earlier in the season. The Golden Rockets, however, haven’t lost a conference game since.
T1. Wellston Golden Rockets | 8-2 (Conf. 4-1)

Note: Due to a score error in MaxPreps that has since been fixed, last week’s standings update claimed Wellston defeated Piketon 66-60. It should have stated that Piketon defeated Wellston 66-60. Hardwood Heroes apologizes for the error.
After losing their first game since Dec. 11 two weeks ago, Wellston got back to winning last week. The Golden Rockets took down Federal Hocking on the road 53-36 before tying Meigs in the TVC-Ohio standings with a 52-46 win over Vinton County.
The Golden Rockets’ win over Vinton County was another historic moment for Wellston basketball. Before last week, the last time Wellston beat Vinton County on the road was in 2001, according to The Telegram.
Wellston can take the TVC-Ohio lead with two wins this week. To take the lead, the Golden Rockets must defeat River Valley on Tuesday and Meigs on Friday.
3. Vinton County Vikings | 4-6 (Conf. 3-2)

The Vinton County Vikings played two crucial games this week against the top two teams in the conference, Meigs and Wellston. The Vikings were able to snap their four-game losing streak with a close three-pointwin over Meigs, 58-55. However, the momentum would not carry over into their game against Wellston, which they lost 52-46. Their last game of the week was a nonconference opponent, Zane Trace, but VC was unable to bounce back, losing their second in a row 57-39.
The Vikings have two more in-conference matchups this week against teams below them in the standings. VC has met and beaten Athens and Alexander earlier in the season, so they should be familiar with their game. Athens will travel to VC on Tuesday, and the Vikings will head to Alexander on Friday.
T4. Nelsonville-York Buckeyes | 6-5 (Conf. 2-3)

The Nelsonville-York Buckeyes played two key games in the past week. One nonconference game against Trimble, as well as one conference game against the Athens Bulldogs. The Buckeyes went 2-0 in this stretch, bumping their conference record to 2-3 on the season, and it boosted them above a .500 winning percentage overall.
Alec Thompson leads the Buckeyes in scoring thus far, at 12.8 ppg, followed by Cameron Sullivan at 11.0 ppg, who has led the team in rebounding as well, at 8.1 rpg.
Nelsonville-York has an important week ahead, with two in-conference battles coming against Alexander and River Valley. Both are familiar opponents: the Buckeyes dropped the Dec. 8 matchup to Alexander 65-55 and won the Dec. 11 game against River Valley, 62-47.
T4. Athens Bulldogs | 4-6 (Conf. 2-3)

The Athens Bulldogs split their week 1-1 against conference opponents Nelsonville-York and Alexander.
They dropped their first game against the Buckeyes, 64-57. The Bulldogs kept it close all game and even took the lead 40-35 in the third quarter. The Buckeyes stormed back, climbing ahead 58-55 with 4:19 remaining in the fourth quarter. Nelsonville-York would cruise to a 64-57 victory, only allowing Athens to score one more basket.
Athens dominated in several areas but shot 46% compared to Nelsonville-York’s 67%. Both teams struggled from behind the arc, shooting 18% and 17%, respectively, and the game came down to clutch free-throw shooting.
The Bulldogs picked up a much-needed win against a struggling Alexander team Friday, taking the game 63-30 at home. Athens got out early and kept its foot on the gas against the Spartans, building on the shooting issues from Tuesday’s loss.
Athens is scheduled to travel to Vinton County on Tuesday before visiting Marietta on Saturday in a nonconference matchup.
6. River Valley Raiders | 5-7 (Conf. 2-4)

River Valley split their games last week. The Raiders began the week with a 61-48 road win over Alexander. However, the Raiders could not take advantage of home court against Meigs, who beat River Valley 75-52.
During the Meigs game, River Valley senior Braden Bennett accomplished a milestone by scoring his 1,000th career point.
River Valley will face two teams they lost to earlier this season this week. The Raiders will visit Wellston on Tuesday and host Nelsonville-York on Friday.
7. Alexander Spartans | 3-9 (Conf. 1-4)

The Alexander boys fell to last in the conference after two conference losses last week. Their first loss came against River Valley, losing 61-48 in a strong Raiders performance. That win gave River Valley one morethan the Spartans, bringing them to sixth in the conference.
Alexander picked up their second loss of the week against Athens. The Bulldogs won 63-30 in convincing fashion. Athens has one fewer loss than River Valley, putting them in contention for fourth place in the conference with the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes.
The Spartans will head to the Nut House to take on the Buckeyes in their second matchup against NY on Jan. 13. Alexander will return home after that to defend home court against Vinton County on Jan. 16. They will then close out their week with a nonconference game against Southeastern on Jan. 17.
TVC-Ohio Girls’ Standings
1. Athens Bulldogs | 9-2 (Conf. 5-0)

Athens defeated the Wellston Lady Rockets 65-30 on Tuesday, Jan. 6. The Bulldogs showcased their depth with nine players finishing in the scoring column. Depth across the board will elevate the team as conference play advances further through January and into the end of the regular season. Athens’ starters played over two quarters, with senior point guard Ella Chapman leading the team with 17 points.
The victory put Athens two wins ahead of Alexander, Vinton County, and River Valley, as those teams sat tightly grouped in the conference standings.
The Lady Bulldogs face a challenging week with both conference and nonconference matches. Athens will face the current TVC-Hocking leader, the Federal Hocking Lady Lancers, on Monday.
Athens will return home Friday to host River Valley in a pivotal conference matchup. In the teams’ first meeting earlier this season, Athens earned a 64-42 win on the Raiders’ home court.
T2. River Valley Raiders | 7-6 (Conf. 4-2)

River Valley went against their usual patterns last week, as the Raiders lost to a conference opponent and beat a nonconference foe. River Valley dropped their matchup with TVC-Ohio member Vinton County 70-62. Then, the Raiders turned around and beat Wahama, W. Va, 58-47. The win over Wahama snapped River Valley’s three-game losing streak, their longest since the 2021-22 season. In addition, the win over Wahama made the class of 2026 the winningest senior class in River Valley history.
River Valley will try to start a winning streak this week. The Raiders will host Nelsonville-York on Monday and visit Athens on Thursday.
T2. Vinton County Vikings | 9-4 (Conf. 4-2)

The Vinton County Lady Vikings are riding a high after winning two conference matchups in a row against River Valley 70-62 and Wellston 65-40. These two wins bumped the Lady Vikes up to second place in the conference.
VC has a full schedule this week with three games on the schedule, the first being an in-conference matchup against the Alexander Spartans tomorrow night. They meet the Logan Elm Braves on Thursday and the Jackson Ironladies on Saturday.
T2. Alexander Spartans | 9-4 (Conf. 4-2)

The Alexander Spartans are on a hot streak. The varsity girls are riding a three-game winning streak heading into their matchup tomorrow against the Vinton County Vikings. This game carries extra weight, as both teams are currently tied for second place in the TVC-Ohio standings.
Alexander picked up two big wins last week, which should help prepare the Spartans for the challenge ahead. They first defeated the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes 56-22, a much-needed bounce-back win after a tough stretch. The Spartans then hit the road to face the Portsmouth West Senators and came away with a 58-49 victory.
Those two wins have given Alexander momentum as they prepare for tomorrow’s showdown with Vinton County, followed by a Wednesday TVC-Hocking matchup against Wellston.
5. Nelsonville-York Buckeyes | 3-9 (Conf. 2-4)

The Nelsonville-York Lady Buckeyes dropped their first two games of the new year this past week. Alexander and Trimble handled business Against the Lady Buckeyes; with both losses coming at a 30-point deficit.
Despite the losses, junior Madi Pidcock has continued to shine this season. She leads them in scoring (21.3 ppg), rebounding (7.2 rpg), steals (3.6 spg), and blocks (2.1 bpg).
The girls look to a packed week, with River Valley, Southern, and Meigs scheduled in the span of 4 days. It should prove to be an opportunity for the Lady Buckeyes to rise in the conference standings, with two of the three being TVC-Ohio matchups.
6. Meigs Marauders | 1-11 (Conf. 1-4)

The Lady Marauders had one game on the schedule this week, which was a loss to Alexander 53-27. This gave Meigs their fourth conference loss of the year so far.
As for this week, the Lady Marauders have conference opponents Wellston and NY. So far this season, the Lady Marauders took down Wellston and lost to NY.
7. Wellston Golden Rockets | 0-13 (Conf. 0-6)

The Wellston girls’ basketball team lost both of their TVC-Ohio matchups last week. The Golden Rockets began the week with a loss to conference leader Athens 65-30. Wellston fared much better against Vinton County. Although the Golden Rockets lost 65-40, Wellston’s 40-point outing marks their highest-scoring game of the season. Even the 25-point margin is a step forward for the Golden Rockets, as that is the closest they have come to beating a conference opponent.
This week, Wellston will face Meigs, whose only wins this season were against the Golden Rockets on Monday and Alexander on Thursday.
