POMEROY, Ohio (WOUB) – The Meigs Marauders faced off in an offensive showdown against the Wellston Golden Rockets. The Marauders would end up finding their defensive footing in the fourth, winning the game 77-62.

The first quarter previewed the strong offense we would get throughout the game. The Marauders were able to dominate the paint, finding 18 of their 21 points from the field. The Rockets got hot beyond the arch, collecting three three-pointers in the first, with Wes Briggs leading the scoring. However, it would be in vain as Meigs would lead 21-13 at the whistle.

The story remained the same in the second, with Wellston able to find a bit of a groove on both sides of the ball. Briggs was able to find multiple huge threes early in the quarter, cutting the lead down to five. Rylan Long was the leader on Wellston’s defensive side of the ball, collecting two steals and a defensive rebound.

At the end of the second quarter, the momentum quickly switched back to the side of the Marauders. With long offensive possessions and multiple offensive rebounds, Meigs would not give up the ball and with multiple huge buckets by Owen Tracy and an earthquake-level slam dunk from Carson Davis, the Meigs crowd was deafening and Wellston’s bench had quickly silenced. Meigs found themselves with a 13 point lead at half, up 49-36.

Coming back from break, the Rockets were dominant. They started the quarter with a 12-4 run, with a massive three from Braxton Ingalls that led to a Marauder timeout. After that, the offenses slowed down greatly. With strong defensive play on both sides and multiple turnovers, the rest of the quarter was nearly without scoring, except a big three from Wellston’s Owen Kilgour. At the end of the third, Wellston is back in this game, down 60-55.

Meigs would not be deterred, however, starting the fourth with a 7-0 run and shutting down Wellston’s offensive possessions. Meigs’ defense stayed hot throughout the final quarter, holding the Rockets to only three points with only two minutes left in the game. Wellston wasn’t helping themselves either, with multiple missed free throws in several important situations.

Following Wellston’s final timeout, the game was a foregone conclusion, with several field goals made on both sides to close it out. Ethan Grimm would finish the game taking the ball to center court, the final score, 77-62.

Meigs rises to 9-5 and will face off against Fairfield Union next week, while Wellston is handed their third loss of the season, falling to 9-3, and will play Berne Union on Tuesday.
