GLOUSTER, Ohio (WOUB) – The Trimble Tomcats (11-6, 4-3 in conf.) hit the road Thursday night to face the reigning state champions, the Waterford Wildcats (10-8, 5-2 in conf.). Both teams would keep it close all four quarters, but the Wildcats would prevail to defend their court, winning with a final score of 47-38.

Waterford would get straight to business, bringing the quick-pace to go on a strong run being led by Sophomore Brynlee Pottmeyer, who would score 11 points to take the early lead 21-4.

Come second quarter, it seemed as if Waterford was ready to call it a night early, but the Tomcats weren’t going down without a fight. However, as they would bring the physicality to keep it close and, in the process, had their highest scoring quarter with 19 points. Despite the effort, the Tomcats would still go into halftime down 29-23.

Coming out from half, both teams would leave their energy from the first half behind and would struggle to make their shots and getting the easy rebounds, giving each other chances to capitalize off of said mistakes but were unable to do that as well. Trimble especially had a hard time making the most out of opportunities they were given, in particular on free-throws. The Wildcats would keep their lead, but given the lack of energy, it was still anyone’s game.

“We just struggled to put the ball in the hoop, our turnovers ran down in the ground so if we can fix our turnovers, we can start scoring a little bit better”, said Head Coach Josh Lavy when asked about his team’s struggles.

At the beginning of the fourth, both teams continued to struggle with their self-inflicted wounds. However, halfway through the quarter, the Wildcats would find the second gear to just barely hold on to the lead.

In the waning moments of the game, Trimble would try to stay alive and make up for their previous mistakes, but the clock would expire, and Waterford would walk away the winners, with a final score of 47-38.

Both teams will look to build off their performances come Monday, as Trimble will hit the road again to face the Millersport Lakers at 6:30 p.m. and Waterford will host the Fort Frye Cadets at 6:00 p.m.
