BIDWELL, Ohio (WOUB) – The Alexander Spartans took a trip on Saturday to play the River Valley Raiders in their home gymnasium. With a fast, aggressive playstyle against a team much the same, the Lady Spartans found the hoop and the win 68-57. River Valley, with the home-field advantage and amazing offensive performances, dominated the first quarter. Senior Hayley Edwards stole the show and often the ball directly. She completed every three-point shot she took this quarter, along with two additional field goals. Even up against impressive shooting like that, Alexander refused to give up. Their fighting spirit allowed them to tie it up 15-15.

In the second, a shift in defense from Alexander allowed them to take the lead and halt the Raiders’ scoring. Both teams continued to shoot well, but Edwards fell behind, especially in the realm of field goals and the rest of the team were unable to compensate and continued to turn the ball over to the Spartans. Alexander’s Lily Ryder was a true standout this quarter, completing three field goals and helping her team to their 30-26 lead by the end of the half, but River Valley could not be counted out just yet.

The Spartans rolled the momentum through halftime into the third, continuing to widen their lead and allowing their players to shine. Macie Hubbard and Karah Allison led scoring during this quarter, with an impressive four and three field goals , respectively. The Raiders continued to fight, helped by their 100% free throw completion rate, including four from Edwards. River Valley was still fighting, but they’d have to continue that fight into the fourth as the quarter ended 56-43 Alexander.

All the energy on both teams led to a chippy fourth quarter, including multiple foul shots and rough play, but all of that ended in Alexander maintaining their lead and coming out victorious 68-57. Alexander will hope to continue their success against Meigs on Tuesday and River Valley will have a chance to improve their record against Vinton County the same night.
