TVC-Ohio Standings: Meigs Boys and Athens Girls sit at the top of their conference’s and control their own destiny

TVC-Ohio Boys’ Standings
1. Meigs Marauders | 11-6 (Conf. 7-1)

After a cancellation earlier in the week against Nelsonville-York, the Marauders lone game this week was Friday against Athens. Meigs took down Athens 68-58 earlier this season and was looking to do the same on Friday.
Athens grabbed a lead as high as 12 in the third quarter, but a switch flipped for the Marauders. They went on a 25-5 run lasting from the third quarter into the fourth to take home a 61-55 win. Senior Carson Davis had another stellar performance this week, dropping 33 points in the win. He earned Hardwood Heroes Hero of the Week for the second time in a row. Alongside Davis, Colben Beucler dropped 15 points and made crucial buckets down the stretch.
Next week for Meigs features Alexander at home on Tuesday and Vinton County on the road on Thursday. As of right now, the Marauders control their own destiny for the top of the conference with four conference games left.
2. Wellston Golden Rockets |11-3 (Conf. 6-2)

The Wellston boys’ basketball team had all their games this week postponed. The Golden Rockets return to action next week with a trio of nonconference games. Wellston will play Ross County Christian on Tuesday, West Union on Wednesday and Adena on Saturday at the SOSA Classic at Jackson High School.
3. Vinton County Vikings | 6-9 (Conf. 5-3)

After a week off due to inclement weather, the Vinton County Vikings are looking to get back in the win column. The Vikings haven’t played a game since Jan. 23 against conference opponent Nelsonville-York who won the matchup 61-47. Junior Josh Montgomery led the team in scoring with 15 points, two assists and three steals.
VC will play two conference games this week against the conference leading Meigs Marauders this Thursday. The Vikings have played Meigs once before and won in a close matchup 58-55. Their second conference game is this Saturday at home against Nelsonville-York a team sitting just below them in the standings. The Vikings will hope to split the season series with the Buckeyes with a win this weekend to improve their conference record.
4. Nelsonville-York Buckeyes | 9-8 (Conf. 4-4)

The Buckeyes had two games postponed this week, leaving them with only one to play on Saturday. In that game, they traveled to South Point and took home their eighth loss of the season.
The next three games will prove significant for Nelsonville-York as they’re ranked 15 in the Division V Southeast District and will need as many wins as they can get before the tournament draw. Next week, they’ll play two of the three against Athens and Vinton County.
5. River Valley Raiders | 6-10 (Conf. 3-5)

The River Valley Raiders were snowed in this week, as all their games were cancelled. The Raiders will begin a four-game homestand next week against Southern on Monday and Alexander on Thursday.
6. Athens Bulldogs | 5-10 (Conf. 2-5)

The Athens Bulldogs played one game this week. The team was due to face River Valley on Tuesday, but that game was rescheduled to February 11 in Raider country.
Athens hosted Meigs on Friday, with Carson Davis dropping 33 points in the Marauders’ 61-55 win. Davis also had nine rebounds and three assists, boosting Meigs over the Bulldogs and fueling a 25-5 run. Athens was up 37-25 on Meigs in the third quarter, but they could not put Davis and his squad away.
Collin Chapman is another bright spot in the team’s performance, leading the team in scoring with 19 points as a sophomore.
Athens is set to host two games this week, one nonconference matchup against Warren and a duel against their conference rival, Nelsonville-York.
7. Alexander Spartans | 4-13 (Conf. 1-7)

The Alexander Spartans had no chance to advance in the conference due to the winter system that blew through Albany this week. Their game against the Wellston Golden Rockets was moved to next Monday, Feb. 9. However, the Spartans did play a game Spartans the Oak Hill Oaks in the legendary Hoosier Gym.That game ended as a loss with the Oaks taking it 48-42.
Next week, Alexander will have two conference games. They start the week with their rematch against Meigs on Feb. 3 and one against River Valley on Feb. 5.
TVC-Ohio Girls’ Standings
1. Athens Bulldogs | 14-3 (Conf. 8-0)

Athens played two games this week; their meeting against the Vinton County Vikings postponed to February 11 due to inclement weather.
The Bulldogs built an early lead, holding Nelsonville-York to six points in the first quarter and extending their advantage to 28-18 by halftime. Lex Koopal led the way with 27 points, Ella Chapman and Quinn Banks scoring 11 and 10 respectively, helping Athens outscore the Lady Buckeyes 26-16 in the second half for a 54-33 victory, marking their second win over Nelsonville-York this season.
Athens faced off against OVC opponent Gallia Academy on Saturday, a game that was rescheduled from January 24. The Lady Blue Angels were 10-6 on the season entering this contest, the Bulldogs handing them a 44-40 loss in a tough battle.
The guards led the way for Athens, Olivia Smart and Ella Chapman, leading with 16 and 13 points each. The Bulldogs left points on the board at the charity stripe, failing to put Gallia Academy away early and forcing a much tighter contest than Athens has come to expect this season.
The Bulldogs play Wellston and Meigs this week for a chance to add two more conference wins to their resume, and inch even closer to their third-straight TVC-Ohio title.
2. Vinton County Vikings | 11-6 (Conf. 6-2)

The Vinton County Lady Vikings saw each of their games last week canceled due to weather. VC is sitting comfortably in the second spot just behind undefeated Athens. Four of their last five games are conference matchups. The Lady Vikings are hoping to win a share of the TVC-Ohio conference title for the first time since they went to the state final four in 2021.
They’ve got a busy week playing three conference games. They start the week Tuesday at River Valley a team that they previously beat 70-62. They follow that with back-to-back games the first against Meigs and the second against Wellston.
3. Alexander Spartans | 12-7 (Conf. 6-4)

The Alexander Lady Spartans faced off against the River Valley Raiders on Jan. 31 for their only game of the week. Alexander placed a lot of emphasis on this rematch, mostly because, while Morgan Grinstead has been the head coach, the Lady Spartans have never won at River Valley ever. That all changed yesterday when Alexander won the game 68-57. In a dominant showing from the Lady Spartans, they put up the most points they have ever scored against the Raiders in the Grinstead Era. This moved Alexander up to third in the conference, and their next couple of games could move them up more.
Their next game is against Meigs on Feb. 3 and one against Nelsonville-York on Feb. 6.
4. River Valley Raiders | 8-8 (Conf. 5-4)

The River Valley girls saw some action this week. However, they went winless on the week, losing to Alexander 68-57. Because Athens and Vinton County have a game against each other pending, River Valley can no longer make up the gap between themselves and the Bulldogs and Vikings, which means the Raiders are out of contention for the TVC-Ohio title.
River Valley will try to generate some momentum before the tournament draw next week. The Raiders play their final home game of the season against Vinton County on Tuesday before visiting Wellston on Thursday and Rock Hill on Saturday.
5. Nelsonville-York Buckeyes | 5-14 (Conf. 4-6)

The Lady Buckeyes’ game against Wellston, originally scheduled for Tuesday, was pushed back to this week. Still, Nelsonville-York played Athens on Thursday, a game they dropped, 54-33.
The Lady Buckeyes wrap the season next week – Federal Hocking on Monday, Wellston on Tuesday, and finally Alexander on Friday. Junior Madi Pidcock continues to shine, averaging 20.2 ppg, 7.3 rpg, and 2.9 spg.
6. Meigs Marauders | 2-15 (Conf. 2-7)

Due to the cancellations this week for Meigs, they weren’t able to hit the hardwood this week. With reschedules, Meigs has a pretty loaded back home stretch of the schedule.
The Lady Marauders feature three games on the schedule next week. At home against Alexander on Tuesday, heading to Vinton County on Thursday, and staying on the road to take on Athens on Friday. As for the following week, Meigs has Jackson and Eastern on Wednesday Feb. 11 and Thursday Feb. 12.
Busy schedule for the squad as the playoffs roll around. Head Coach Mark Griffin also highlighted the JV team this week, who is currently 9-3 on the season.
7. Wellston Golden Rockets | 1-14 (Conf. 0-7)

Wellston did not have any games this week. Although the long break may have been a relief for Wellston. T he Golden Rockets will have no relief this week, as they play five games in five days. Wellston will play Athens on Monday, Nelsonville-York on Tuesday, West Union on Wednesday, River Valley on Thursday and Vinton County on Friday.
