Pointers dominate Tornadoes in non-conference matchup

SOUTH POINT, Ohio (WOUB) – Friday night, the 0-1 Southern Tornadoes came into enemy territory to face off against the 1-0 South Point Pointers in a non-conference matchup. South Point showed their dominance, with the final score being 38-0.
Immediately, the Pointers’ defense led the way to start, holding Southern to a quick three-and-out and forcing good field position. South Point’s offense didn’t waste a beat with a 20-yard touchdown pass caught by Marcus Handshaw off a routine throw by Ethan Hunt, making it look easy after needing only one first down.
After an unsuccessful extra point, the Pointers led 6-0. The Tornadoes’ defense did not lay down. After a great scramble by Hunt, South Point was on the cusp of scoring once again until linebacker Cooper Diddle swiped their touchdown pass away with an interception. With good field position again, the Pointers’ only goal was to run the ball as hard and as much as possible. Soon later, running back Landon Vance flew untouched right up the middle for a touchdown. To make up for the missed extra point, the Pointers got right back to the line and got an easy two-point conversion by running back Robert Napier. South Point leads 14-0 in the second quarter.
South Point’s defense kept the exact same energy as the offense and immediately forced a fumble on the other side of the football. Southern was feeling the momentum shift, but the defense stepped up and forced a fumble of their own in the Pointers’ next possession. After another empty offensive possession from the Tornadoes, South Point had enough time to punch Vance into the end zone for his second touchdown of the half.
After a successful extra point, the Pointers were up 21-0 with little time left in the second. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better for them, the defense stifled Southern for a quick three-and-out. With under a minute left and the ball, South Point sent Erza Young out to try for a lengthy 42-yard field goal, and he drilled it. The Pointers led 24-0 at half, looking dominant.
Coming into the second half, the Tornadoes’ offense still couldn’t capitalize despite some solid possessions led by pass catching. At the end of the third quarter, the Pointers sensed blood in the water. Off a pass catch, Davon Lewis went 89 yards to the house. South Point is shutting down 31-0 as the fourth quarter begins. Then, to add gasoline to an already well-lit fire, Lewis broke off another 43-yard touchdown. South Point leads the avalanche 38-0.
South Point wins 38-0 to move to 2-0 on the season. Southern goes home, falling to 0-2. Next week, South Point will take to the road to play Wellston, while Southern tries to regroup at home against Miller.
