LOGAN, Ohio (WOUB) – The Lancaster Golden Gales (1-5;1-2 OCC-Buckeye) traveled to face the Logan Chieftains (1-5;0-3 OCC-Buckeye) in a conference matchup where the Golden Gales were victorious, 35-23.
From the jump, the Lancaster defense made their mark as on Logan’s first drive, Ryder Smith would get an interception and go all the way. The pick six would open the scoring early with the Golden Gales going up, 7-0.
But Logan would not make the same mistake on their second drive. Ethan Courtney was a dual threat, using his arm and his legs. After a huge pass to Carson Tootle to put them deep in the red zone, Courtney would take it himself from one yard out, and the Chieftains would be on level terms, 7-7.
After getting a stop, Logan looked to keep the momentum going, but they would turn the ball over again, this time by way of a fumble. And it would prove to be costly as Lancaster took advantage with Jahmeir Gordon breaking for a 13-yard rushing touchdown. The Golden Gales regained the lead, 14-7.
In the second quarter, it would get a little bit hectic. First, Courtney would narrowly miss Tootle in the end zone on fourth down, resulting in a turnover on downs.
However, the Chief defense would get the ball back with a fumble, but then the Lancaster defense would respond, forcing a fumble of their own.
This wild sequence would get capped off with a botched punt for the Golden Gales, as the snap was too high for the punter with the ball going out of the end zone for a safety and the deficit would be cut, 14-9.
But at the end of the half, Lancaster would go down the field in the last few minutes, with the drive ending with Carter Carlisle finding Jack Pompey for a 16-yard passing touchdown with 19 seconds left, and the Golden Gales would have a 21-9 heading into halftime.
In the second half, despite giving away an interception, the Lancaster defense would step up and force another turnover on downs with Jackson Reynolds getting a huge sack on fourth and two.
On the ensuing drive, Gordon would later go in from four yards out for his second rushing touchdown of the night, making it 28-9.
That would ice the game as although Logan would get a couple scores at the end, it would be too late as Lancaster would go on to win, 35-22.
Lancaster improves to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play, and they look to keep the momentum going against Reynoldsburg.
Logan falls to 1-6 overall with a 0-4 conference record, and they look to bounce back against Canal Winchester.
