ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) – Ohio Field Hockey (6-7, 3-3) faced James Madison (6-6, 5-1) at Pruitt Field on Friday. Ohio was shutout by the Dukes giving up six goals, to lose 6-0.
The first period was dominated by James Madison as they scored three goals. Just over two minutes in, their first goal, scored by Azul Covarrubias and assisted by Avery Ruckman and Bryanna Hill, came after a penalty corner. Only about thirty seconds later, Ruckman would score a goal of her own, assisted by Covarrubias.
Both teams would cool off for a few minutes, as both defenses would work to limit scoring opportunities. However, James Madison would find the chance to score once more after another penalty corner. Bobcat goalie Molly Shreiner would be able to block the first shot on goal by Emma Smit, but Hill found opening and scored the Dukes’ third goal.
Ohio would have a chance to get on the board after a penalty corner by Natalie Lafleur with just over thirty seconds left in the period, but they would come up short as it was blocked.
Going into the second period, the Dukes would keep their momentum, both offensively and defensively, allowing no shots on goal by the Bobcats, and scoring another goal of their own by Diede Donders, assisted by Ella Dunstan. This was Donders’ first goal of the season. James Madison would go into the half leading 4-0.
Ohio would get two penalty corners at the beginning of the third period, but both would have no result as shots by Karley DuCoin and Marie De Grande would be saved by Dukes’ goalie Hannah Popolis. James Madison would get a couple of penalty corners themselves, but both would also come up short, as one was blocked and one was saved by Shriner. The Bobcats would get another toward the end of the period, and Deborah James would have a shot on goal that would be saved by Popolis. The Dukes still lead 4-0.
James Madison would strike again early into the final period, thanks to a goal by Emma Smit, assisted by Donders and Sophia Walch. They would tack on one more goal by Lilly Turner, assisted by Anna Collinge. The Bobcats would have some chances to fight back with a couple of penalty corners by LaFleur, but nothing would come of either, and James Madison would go om to win 6-0.
James Madison’s keepers, Popolis and Lilly Sweeney, had a combined four saves and zero goals allowed, while Ohio keeper, Schreiner, had just two saves and six goals allowed. Ohio had eight penalty corners, and James Madison had five.
James Madison will face Central Michigan on Oct. 18, and Ohio will travel to face defeated Longwood on Oct. 18.
