ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Ohio Hockey (7-0) continued its undefeated season, winning its seventh game in a row against N0. 24 Stony Brook University (1-2-1) at home on the first day of their weekend series.
The matchup started slowly, with the first 16 minutes of the game going scoreless. Ohio spent much of the first period in the offensive zone, putting pressure on Stony Brook’s goal. Despite this offensive pressure, Stony Brook forward Peter Labos scored the first goal of the evening on the Seawolves’ third shot attempt of the game.
The Bobcats wasted no time responding, with Mathieu Ovaert scoring about two minutes later. Ohio goaltender Garrett Alderman remained at ease as the Seawolves focused primarily on defense and keeping the Bobcats away from their goal.
With the game tied at one entering the second period, the Bobcats continued to apply offensive pressure and scored two more goals. Barron Stibbe scored his first of two goals on the night, and Kevin Kasper added another.
The third period started strong for Ohio as Luc Reeve scored just 1:03 into the period. He went on to score two more consecutive goals, completing a hat trick after his teammate Gianni Divita also scored. With about 8:30 left in the period, the Bobcats led 7-1.
However, the Bobcats didn’t stop there. They continued to limit the Stony Brook shot attempts and applied defensive pressure to regain possession of the puck. In the final eight minutes of the game, the Bobcats added four more goals. Noah Holt scored his first of the game, while Reeve scored his fourth, and Ovaert and Stibbe each added their second goals.
With his fourth goal of the night, Reeve made history by becoming Ohio’s all-time leading goal scorer, with 95 career goals for the Bobcats.
The teams will face off again Saturday, Oct. 17, as the Bobcats look to defend their undefeated record. Puck drop is at 3 p.m. at Bird Ice Arena.
