Bill Protecting Ohio Pupils From Testing Impacts Advances

A bill protecting students from the academic impacts of Ohio’s new proficiency tests is headed toward the expected signature of Gov. John Kasich.
The measure cleared its final legislative hurdle Tuesday with unanimous Ohio House concurrence.
It prohibits the state from using results of tests being rolled out this year from determining a student’s academic advancement to the next grade, except where it relates to the state’s third-grade reading guarantee.
The bill also prohibits using results of new state math and English assessments to make course credit decisions and prevents schools from sharing individual test scores with outside sources without parental consent.
Republican state Rep. Jim Buchy, the bill’s sponsor, said Ohio is creating a safe harbor for students and schools as the test process is fine-tuned.
