Portions of the City of Athens are under a boil order until 2 p.m. tomorrow, April 7.

Affected areas include Morrison Elementary and Beacon School on West Union Street (State Route 56) and the Market on State on East State Street, with the exception of Ponderosa Steakhouse and Tim Horton’s Cafe and Bake Shop.

The following streets/roads in the city are also affected:

– Herrold

– Blick

– Blueline

– Hemlock

– Windsong

– Kenny

– Jefferson

– Elliottsville

City deputy service director Ron Lucas said yesterday in a press release that the city would be completing two waterline repairs today — one at the Market on State and one on West Union Street past the Athens County Fairgrounds.

A press release from the city says a boil order is a precautionary measure and does not mean the water is definitely contaminated. The Ohio EPA recommends public water suppliers to issue a boil order anytime the water system is compromised due to operational maintenance, local flooding, or a water main break.

The City of Athens automatically lifts boil orders after 24 hours if testing shows the water is not contaminated.

Residents under the boil order should bring their water to a full boil and then boil for additional three minutes prior to use and are encouraged to put a cup over their faucets as a reminder to not use tap water.

Additionally, residents should only use boiled water for drinking and preparing food or baby formula.

Water for bathing does not need to be boiled but still should not be ingested.

Dishwater should be sterilized with a final dip in water including one teaspoon of unscented household bleach of water.

Affected residents should call the boil order hotline at (740)-594-5078 for more information.
