Ohio Baseball Falls To Cincinnati, 4-1
< < Back to ohio-baseball-falls-cincinnati-4-1The Ohio Bobcats (4-19, 1-2) dropped their third game in a row, losing 4-1 to the Cincinnati Bearcats (8-13) at Marge Schott Field on Tuesday.
Sophomore Tyler Wells and senior Dan Schmidt combined for four of the team’s six hits to lead the Bobcats offensively. Schmidt also extended his hitting streak to a season-high, 10 games.
Sophomore pitcher Nick Plys got the start for Ohio, going two innings while giving up two runs on three hits and two walks. Four other pitchers saw action Tuesday, pitching a combined six innings and only giving up one run on seven hits.
The Bobcats once again fell behind early, with the Bearcats knocking in three runs in the bottom of the second inning, highlighted by a two-run single by redshirt sophomore Ethan McAlpine.
There was no scoring in the game again until the bottom of the seventh inning, when the Bearcats added another run on an Ian Happ RBI-double down the left field line scoring Justin Glass, making it a 4-0 Bearcat lead.
Ohio had several chances to score in this game. In the third inning, the Bobcats had runners on second and third with one out, but Schmidt got picked off at second base after a line out. In the fifth inning, Ohio had runners on first and third with one out, but Nate Squires got picked off at third base, and Schmidt struck out.
The Bobcats’ big chance came in the eighth inning. With Ben Otto and Schmidt on base, Cody Gaertner singled to left field, loading the bases with nobody out, and John Adryan at the plate. Adryan grounded out into a 4-6-3 double play, scoring Otto and cutting the Bearcats’ lead to 4-1.
The Bobcats hit the field again on Wednesday against the Ohio State Buckeyes
(15-6) at Bob Wren Stadium. First pitch is at 6 p.m.
