Boardwalks Emerging Along Ohio & Erie Canal Trail
< < Back to boardwalks-emerging-along-ohio-erie-canal-trailBoardwalks are emerging along the historic Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail with the help of volunteers.
A 2.7-mile section of trail in Tuscarawas County south of Canton will remain closed until the boardwalk project is finished by late April or early May.
The Ohio & Erie Canal Corridor Coalition based in Akron says volunteer help has been invaluable.
The Dover-New Philadelphia Times-Reporter reports that the Army Corps of Engineers requires the boardwalks to protect wetlands.
Money from the state and Friends of Tuscarawas County is paying the bill. The trail will cost about $200,000, with another $15,000 needed for treated wood and other boardwalk materials.
The towpath was used by horses and mules to pull boats on the canal between Cleveland and the southern tip of Ohio.
