WV Senate Gives Employers Time To Pay Workers
< < Back to wv-senate-gives-employers-time-pay-workersThe West Virginia Senate has passed a bill that gives employers more time to pay fired workers.
The bill passed unanimously Wednesday is amended from one proposed by Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin. Tomblin said that the current requirements are an inconvenience to employers.
Employers currently have 72 hours to pay discharged workers. Tomblin proposed giving them until the next scheduled pay day.
The Senate compromise came with input from unions and the Chamber of Commerce. It gives employers four business days or until the next pay day, whichever comes first.
Tomblin's office said that the compromise is acceptable.
Employers must pay triple the amount owed if they are late in payment.
Groups representing trial lawyers have expressed concern that the change could hurt migrant farm workers in the Eastern Panhandle.
