Ohio Baseball Loses Second Straight To Akron
< < Back to ohio-baseball-loses-second-straight-akronOhio (7-26, 3-8 MAC) lost its second-straight 10-inning game with Akron (8-24, 5-6 MAC), 11-8, at Bob Wren Stadium on Saturday.
Akron’s Matt Rembielak led off the 10th inning with a single, followed by an out and a Dan Schmidt error.
After a walk to load the bases, Ohio reliever Brett Barber (1-4) walked in the go-ahead run. Then Joey Havrilak hit a two-run single to right field to break it open.
Akron reliever Samuel Trecaso (4-1) pitched the final three innings to get his second-straight win against the Bobcats, while Barber got his second-straight loss.
“Really (Barber) was our only option left,” Ohio manager Rob Smith said. “We thought we were going to get a zero in the 10th, but he was gassed and he did the best he could. I admire him for going out there because he wasn’t even on the available list today.”
Ohio starter Marck Paliotto pitched five innings, allowing five runs, four earned, and six hits.
In the first inning, Akron jumped out to a 2-0 lead after back-to-back doubles by Devan Ahart and Matt LaRocca.
Ohio answered with singles by Nick Squires and Scott White, followed by a double steal. Tyler Wells had an RBI groundout and made it 2-1 after the first inning.
From that point on until the sixth inning, it was all Akron. Akron scored two runs in the third, one run in the fifth, and a run in the sixth to go up 6-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, Ohio scored all five runs in the inning with two outs. A two-run double by Dan Schmidt, a two-run single by Nate Squires, and an RBI single by Ben Otto tied the game at six.
“Our guys battled, they don’t give in, they haven’t rolled over, they haven’t quit playing and that’s something I’m very proud of,” Smith said.
Akron added two more runs in the eighth inning off a solo home run by Joey Havrilak and an RBI single by Kris Simonton.
Ohio tied it up again in the bottom of the eighth with a two-out two-run single by Jake Madsen. In the ninth, both teams left two runners stranded to end the inning tied.
Ohio and Akron will finish their series Sunday at 1 p.m.
“Well we have to come out and be offensive (Sunday) because we will be down to only two, maybe three pitchers that will be available,” Smith said.
Ohio starter Connor Sitz will get the start on the mound for the Bobcats.
