Jeremy Johnson (285 lbs.), Phil Wellington (197 lbs.) and Sparty Chino (157 lbs.) are Ohio’s three representatives on the team of 11 student-athletes.
All three wrestlers are first time nominees to the team. Johnson, Wellington and Chino have had great seasons on and off the mats. Wednesday’s announcement comes after all three competed in the 2013 NCAA Championships in Iowa in March. This year, Johnson made his third trip to the championships and Wellington and Chino made their first.
In order to be named to the Academic All-MAC team, a student athlete must carry at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and compete in at least 50 percent of contests in the athlete’s respective sport.
Both Johnson and Wellington have a 3.30 GPA. Johnson is a psychology major and Wellington a mechanical engineering major. Chino carries a 3.40 GPA and is majoring in marketing.
