Ohio Baseball Falls In 10 At Dayton
< < Back toOhio Baseball braved a 30-minute lightning delay in the ninth inning of a tie game, but could not capitalize on two late chances to score, losing at Dayton in extra innings, 2-1.
Jared Broughton led off the home half 10th inning for the Flyers by getting hit with a pitch and was then sacrificed to second base. Then after getting two quick outs, Ohio pitcher Ryan Ferrell intentionally walked Mark Podlas, bringing up Kyle Robinett.
With runners on first and second, Robinett ripped a base hit into right field, but an error by Nick Squires allowed the winning run to come across and score.
Junior Sean Kennedy made the start for Ohio (12-34, 7-14 MAC), throwing four shutout innings and giving up eight hits.
Senior Brett Barber pitched in relief for the Bobcats, throwing two shutout innings and striking out three.
Freshman Ryan Ferrell (0-1) was credited with the loss.
Just as they did on Sunday against Buffalo, Ohio got on the board first.
Junior Scott White ripped a two-out single into right field, scoring Nick Squires from third to give Ohio a 1-0 lead in the third inning.
Dayton (10-34-1, 3-18 A-10)) would finally get on the board in the seventh inning.
Ralph Alloco led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Robby Sunderman. Two batters later, Ryan Berry ripped a double into left-center off of Ohio pitcher Logan Cozart, scoring Alloco to tie the game at one.
Dayton had the benefit of a great start from freshman pitcher Charlie Dant, who threw 8.1 innings of six-hit, one-run baseball and struck out four.
Dant was not credited with a decision.
Freshman reliever Nick Weybright (3-1) picked up the win for Dayton, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings and allowing two hits.
Ohio certainly had its chances to steal a lead late in the contest.
With one out in the top of the ninth, senior Dan Schmidt took a hit-by-pitch, as lightning split the sky in Southwest Ohio, prompting the aforementioned delay.
Shortly after play resumed, Schmidt aggressively stole second base, and then moved to third on an errant throw from the catcher.
Senior Ben Otto worked a walk, giving Ohio men on first and third with only one out. But both Chandler Geller and John Adryan would pop out to the catcher, ending their threat in the ninth.
The very next inning, Ohio had would threaten again.
Back-to-back hits by Nick and Nate Squires gave the Bobcats runners at first and second with one out. A Cody Gaertner fly out to center field advanced Nick Squires to third base, leaving Jake Madsen at the plate with two outs and runners on the corners.
But Madsen flew out to right field, ending that threat as well.
Nick Squires garnered a career-high four hits on the contest. Nate Squires also extended his on-base streak to 24 consecutive games with his hit in the ninth inning.
Both teams combined for a total of 20 hits, but also combined to leave 18 men on base.
Ohio takes the field again Wednesday night in Pittsburgh to take on the Pitt Panthers. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
