Dewine: About 8K Rape Kits Tested for DNA Matches
< < Back to dewine-about-8k-rape-kits-tested-for-dna-matchesCOLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – The state’s forensic scientists have tested more than 8,000 rape kits submitted by law enforcement agencies around Ohio to check for possible DNA matches.
Just over 10,000 kits have been submitted as part of an effort that began in 2011 to check previously untested kits for evidence. Of those kits, roughly 1,200 were submitted after a new law went into effect in March.
The law now requires law enforcement agencies to submit any remaining previously untested sexual assault kits associated with a past crime to a crime lab within a year. All newly collected rape kits must be turned over within 30 days after an agency determines a crime has been committed.
Attorney General Mike DeWine says submissions have come from investigators in 194 law enforcement agencies.
