Female Prison Won’t Be Converted To All-Male

Senate Finance Committee chairman Mike Hall says Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin gave him a “clear indication” that proposed changes at the Lakin Correctional Center won’t happen.
Corrections officials hoped to transfer Lakin’s 545 female inmates to the Naval Information Operations Center in Pendleton County and convert Lakin into a prison for men.
Hall says he favors a health-care company’s plan to use the base as a career college for youths moving out of the foster care system.
Media outlets report Tomblin must decide by Sept. 4 whether to accept transfer of the main base in Sugar Grove to state ownership. The base is scheduled to close at the end of September.
