Mount Union Spoils Marietta Volleyball’s Winning Streak
< < Back to mount-union-spoils-marietta-volleyballs-winning-streakThe Marietta College Pioneers volleyball team ended its two-game winning streak when they lost in four sets to eighth-ranked Mount Union Purple Raiders 25-23, 23-25, 25-17, 25-13.
The Pioneers (9-9) started strong with a 6-3 start to the first set but the Raiders (17-0) quickly struck back in a close set where neither team led by more than three points. The set ended in dramatic fashion as a Pioneer attack error handed the set to Mount Union.
The second set saw Marietta go on strong runs of 6-1 and 7-2, but the Pioneers allowed the Raiders to stay in the game.
Mount Union established its dominance in the third and fourth sets to take leads early and showed a suffocating defense that proved why the Purple Raiders are ranked No. 8.
Marietta struggled offensively with only 37 kills, 32 assists and a .134 kill percentage while the Raiders had 59 kills, 55 assists and .217 kill percentage.
Sophomore right side hitter Keri Horton led the Pioneers in kills with nine and a .200 percentage, closely followed by sophomore middle blocker Chloe Janson with eight kills and a .065 percentage. Junior setter Laura Mauer owned 26 of the teams 32 assists.
The Pioneers look to reclaim their winning record with a pair of non-conference matches over the weekend. They take on Bluffton University at 1 p.m. and Geneva College at 3:30 p.m on Saturday, Sept. 28.
