GOTW: Parkersburg, P. South Face Off In 47th ‘Civil War’

In 1967 Parkersburg, West Virginia had just one high school: Parkersburg High School. By the fall of that year PHS had become too big and could no longer house all of its students. Thus, Parkersburg South was created. For 46 years now the Little Kanawha River has separated the north side of Parkersburg from the south side, and in turn, co-workers, siblings and even spouses.
The greatest rivalry in the state of West Virginia returns to the final game of the season for the first time since 1975. On Friday night the 3-6 Big Reds will travel across town to Erickson All-Sports Facility to take on the 2-7 Patriots. Despite struggles for both teams this seaosn, Friday’s game still means everything to the community of Parkersburg.
“This game being the final one of the season gives us great purpose, that cause to keep playing for,” Parkersburg South head coach Mike Eddy said. With a win the Patriots would win their third straight game against the Big Reds, which they have never done in the rivalry’s history.
“Its not the season our seniors wanted, but yet they still have a chance to put their name in the history books forever,” Eddy said.
Parkersburg South returns home after suffering a 62-0 rout at the hands of No. 6 Wheeling Park. The Patriots managed just 89 yards of total offense compared to 508 for Wheeling Park. Not only will South look to win their third straight against their cross-town rivals, but also to avoid a four-game losing streak to end the season.
They aren’t use to losing at Parkersburg High School, but Don Reeves’ Big Reds have struggled all season. For the second year in a row, the team will miss out on the postseason. However, PHS snapped a four game losing streak a week ago, defeating Riverside 25-7. The Big Red offense got back on track with two receiving scores from Dan Fox and 111 yard effort from fullback Corey Burdette.
Since neither team has a shot at making the playoffs, this is essentially their state championship game. The winner of the Civil War fan base will have bragging rights for a year, and provide crucial momentum heading into the offseason.
Kickoff is Friday at 7:30 p.m.
