Primary, General Election Candidates Lack Opponents

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Some state lawmakers in Ohio are expecting a smooth pathway to victory in next year’s elections.
At least 14 Republicans and five Democrats will have no opponent in the March primary or November general election. That could change if local elections boards find problems with candidates’ filings or independent candidates announce bids.
Those lacking challengers in 2016 include House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger, a Clarksville Republican, and House Minority Leader Fred Strahorn, a Dayton Democrat. Republican Sens. Dave Burke of Marysville and Troy Balderson of Zanesville also won’t face opponents.
The GOP, which controls the Legislature, expects primaries in 30 legislative districts. In most cases, those lawmakers were term-limited or left for other jobs. Only a handful of Republican incumbents will face challengers in March.
