Analysis: College Readiness In Ohio Tied To Income Level

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – A new analysis of Ohio report-card data finds stark differences in college- and career-readiness between poor and more affluent districts.
The review of 2014-2015 report-card data by the Ohio Education Policy Institute was released last week. It was requested jointly by the Ohio School Boards Association, the Buckeye Association of School Administrators and the Ohio Association of School Business Officials.
After grouping the state’s school districts according to the percentage of economically disadvantaged students, consultant Howard Fleeter’s analysis showed there is a more than 23-point percentage gap between the average four-year graduation rate in districts with fewer than 10 percent economically disadvantaged students and districts with greater than 90 percent economically disadvantaged students.
Fleeter also found ACT test participation rises as a district’s percentage of low-income students falls.
