Rachel Richardson Breaks Team 3-Point Record
< < Back to rachel-richardson-breaks-team-3-point-recordIt has been a week of breaking records for the Richardson family. Last Friday, Seth Richardson scored his 1,000th point, and on Saturday Leah Richardson broke the Lady Spartans career scoring record as a junior.
Freshman guard Rachel Richardson made history for the Lady Spartans Thursday night as she knocked down nine 3-pointers in a 69-31 Alexander victory over Wellston.
Rachel Richardson scored the first 14 points of the game, knocking down four 3-pointers in the first quarter. She finished the game with a career-high 38 points.
“After she knocked down the first four, I looked at one of my assistants and said lets just break it,” Alexander coach Cory McKnight said.
Rachel Richardson went into halftime with seven 3-pointers under her belt, and she knew she only needed two more to break the record.
“In the locker room Coach said he was going to leave me in the game until I broke it, so I knew I had to go out there and get it,” Rachel Richardson said.
She knocked down her 9th and final 3-pointer of the night halfway through the third quarter and received a standing ovation from the visiting Alexander fans.
The Richardson sisters are very competitive with each other and they like one up-ing each other on anything and everything.
“I definitely have some bragging rights now,” Rachel Richardson said.
Rachel Richardson has to give a lot of credit to her teammates Thursday night for letting her take control of the game and making her dreams of breaking the record come true.
“I am just so thankful my team let me shoot that many 3’s,” Rachel Richardson said.
Coach McKnight handed Rachel Richardson the game ball after the matchup, reminding her of the amazing performance she put up.
“It feels pretty special knowing Coach had faith in me to go get the record after I hit the first four,” Rachel Richardson said.
Leah Richardson had a quiet night as she only put up six points for the Lady Spartans, but Coach McKnight sat her out the whole second half as they have a big game on Saturday.
“I didn’t want to play Leah (Richardson) the second half because we have a big game Saturday and she is going to be guarding one of the best players in the country,” McKnight said.
The Lady Spartans will travel to Ironton on Saturday, Feb. 6 to face the Ashland Lady Tomcats and their point guard Mykassa Robinson, the number one ranked point guard in the country.
With this win tonight, Alexander clinched a first place spot in a three-way tie for the TVC- Ohio title.
