With state playoff spots on the line late in the season, the game plan is simple: play solid football. Williamstown did just that Friday, putting in a team effort on the road against a good opponent.
In a backyard-style battle between two of the top five teams in West Virginia’s Division A, Williamstown defeated Wirt County 27-13.
The Yellowjackets triumphed with classic smash mouth football, winning the battle in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Trey King and Mike Adams combined for 156 yards on the ground and two touchdowns; while Williamstown’s defense played well overall, forcing turnovers and making Tigers quarterback Taylor Campbell’s night very inefficient.
Jake Tracewell managed the game for Williamstown, completing three of four passes for 15 yards. Most importantly, he played mistake-free football for the Yellowjackets, who were in control for the majority of the game.
Wirt County lead for a brief moment in the first quarter, when Campbell connected with Dalton Brindo on a 13-yard fade in the corner of the end zone. This was their only lead of the game.
Williamstown stayed unblemished at 7-0 (6-0) and hosts Gilmer County on October 21.
