Late Goal Lifts Robert Morris Over Ohio
< < Back toA late goal by Robert Morris’ captain and leading scorer lifted the Eagles to a 3-2 win over Ohio at Bird Arena on Saturday night.
Chris Cimoch notched his 21st goal of the season midway through the third period to give Robert Morris its first lead of the weekend series, and the goal stood as the game winner by the time the final buzzer sounded.
Cimoch’s goal was the only goal scored in the game after the 18-minute mark of the first period. All four goals by the two clubs came in the first period.
Both of the Bobcats’ goals came from defensemen, as Tyler Benson and Mike Kretz each put the puck behind Eagles goaltender Anthony Petrak.
Kretz’s tally was his eighth of the year, the most of any defender in green and white this season.
After Kretz scored to give Ohio a 2-1 lead at 16:01 of the first period, Petrak did not allow another puck past him, as he went on to make 28 saves in the contest, a drastic turnaround after yielding seven goals to the Bobcats the night before.
On the other end of the ice, Ohio goalie Aaron Alkema made 26 saves on 29 shots.
Andrew Montague scored on the power play at 13:43 of the first to tie the game 1-1.
Chris Pontello went on to score a short-handed goal with two minutes left in the period and just two minutes after Kretz reestablished the lead for the Bobcats. It was the second short-handed goal Ohio has allowed all season.
Ohio will take several weeks off before resuming play on Jan. 4, when they travel to St. Charles, Mo., for a two-game series with CSCHL rival Lindenwood.
