Report: Ohio Prison Violence Down Since 2011
< < Back to report-ohio-prison-violence-down-since-2011COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – A legislative oversight committee says Ohio prison violence is down.
The Dayton Daily News reports a Correctional Institution Inspection Committee report released Tuesday says violence has fallen nearly 12 percent after peaking five years ago.
The report says in 2011 the department had a violent rule infraction rate of more than 230 per 1,000 inmates. That rate dropped to about 203 per 1,000 in 2014.
The report comes after state Department of Rehabilitation and Correction Director Gary Mohr implemented a new system in 2012.
Violent inmates have been sent to the most controlled prisons. Those who behaved well have been sent to general population and could earn additional privileges.
Inmates who consistently showed pro-social behavior and were committed to their rehabilitation can use more programs and services.
