Federal Hocking Boys Week In Review: Jan. 5-11
< < Back to ?p=15421Federal Hocking head coach Howie Caldwell and his Lancers (4-6, 2-4) were victorious in their only game this week against Belpre (5-5, 4-1) by a score of 61-57.
The Lancers’ game against Wahama earlier in the week was postponed due to inclement weather.
Fed Hock got their starting senior guard Cliff Bonner back for this game, as he was coming off a broken hand he suffered against Belpre in their first meeting.
“I think the break was huge for us,” said Bonner. “Because the game against Wahama was postponed, it was one less game I had to miss and we were able to be fresh coming into the game.”
Both teams came out trading blows and matching each other basket-for-basket and Fed Hock led by 2 going into the locker room.
The Lancers came out of halftime on fire from the floor.
“In the second half, we began hitting shots,” said Bonner. “A couple steals led to easy layups and threes and we were able to push the lead.”
Using those layups and threes, the Lancers were able to push their lead to 10 points.
Three pointers on back-to-back possessions late in the fourth quarter brought Belpre within four.
The Lancers were able to hit their free throws down the stretch to put the game on ice.
“We won the turnover battle,” said Bonner. “We played hard throughout, and winning the turnover battle was crucial for us.”
“We really pushed the ball offensively and executed on offense,” Bonner continued. “We played our game. We forced turnovers and our defense made our offense.”
Alex Nicholas led the charge for the Lancers with 24 points.
The Lancers return to McAfee Gymnasium for a three-game home stand against Miller on Tuesday.
