< < Back to marietta-tops-john-carroll-roadThe Marietta College men’s basketball team escaped the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center with a narrow 78-70 victory over the John Carroll Blue Streaks on Saturday, Jan. 18.
The Blue Streaks (10-5, 4-4) threatened to take over the game late in the second half, cutting their deficit to 67-66 with 5:16 to go. John Carroll took the 68-67 lead off two made free throws from freshman guard Noah Bidar, but that’s the closest the Blue Streaks got the a victory.
The Pioneers (11-4, 6-2) went on a 10-3 run to wrap up the game and got back to their winning ways after dropping two of their last three games in Ohio Athletic Conference play.
Marietta seemed to be the team in charge throughout the whole game, entering halftime with a 41-34 lead and sprinting out of the tunnel as they went on a 6-1 run within the first minute of the second half.
But the Blue Streaks refused to go down, keeping the game close every time the Pioneers put a few baskets together. But Marietta came out as the team on top despite the late surge from John Carroll threatening to push the Pioneers over the top.
The win boosted Marietta into second place in the OAC behind Mount Union (12-2, 7-0), and John Carroll stayed put in solo possession of fourth place. This was also the Blue Streaks’ first home loss of the season.
Sophomore RaNeal Ewing led the Pioneers with 19 points and 10 rebounds to complete his second double-double of the season.
Marietta will now fix their focus on Capital University on Wednesday, Jan. 22. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
